Are Optimists Healthier? – Dr. Weil
Did you know pessimism has been linked to a higher risk of dying before age 65? And that
expressing positive emotions, such as optimism, is associated with lowered production of the stress
hormone cortisol, better immune function, and reduced risk of chronic diseases? If you're a pessimist -
or know someone who is - try the following:

Goat Serum Jabs Help MS Victims to Walk Again
PATIENTS with multiple sclerosis (MS) have experienced dramatic improvements in their condition after
taking part in trials of a drug derived from goat serum.
Some have reported being able to cast aside their walking sticks and walk for miles, or of regaining
their vision or finding they can again use their limbs after years when any movement was agony. Of the
130 patients on the trial, 85% reported big improvements with no side effects.
Among them is Billy Edmiston, of Southsea, who was diagnosed with MS in 1988. “At the time of my first
injections 15 months ago I was using walking sticks and sometimes a wheelchair. I started this treatment
with no expectations but it has been astonishing”, he said.
”I am 500% better than I was. I can walk for several miles without sticks. I¹m much stronger and generally
healthier. And you have to remember that we have always been told that there may be remissions, but that
the progress of the disease is unstoppable.”
The success of the trials has started to gain international recognition with Alan Osmond, one of America¹s
leading campaigners about the disease, traveling from the US to take the drug.
Osmond, the eldest member of the Osmonds singing group, who was diagnosed with the disease 17 years ago,
said: “When I heard about the treatment here I decided I would have to come and see for myself.”
The new treatment is being pioneered by a team of scientists and doctors led by Professor Angus Dalgleish,
an oncologist based at St George¹s hospital, Tooting, South London, who believes it will at worst provide
a highly effective subjective treatment for persons with MS, but may lead to a long-term improvement.
The treatment, given as a weekly injection, is derived from purified serum from immunized goats that produce
antibodies. Three separate clinical trials are now being conducted.
Normally it would have taken about eight years and about £80m to get a new product to this stage. In this
case it has been achieved in three years, having cost so far about £5m.
Dr David Maizels, a family doctor from Chiselhurst in Kent who had been treating patients in the “informed consent”
trials for the past three years, said he had never seen anything like it.
”I want to emphasize that this is not a placebo effect. The improvements are sustained and there are almost
no side effects. At times the results are amazing,” he said.
The trials, the first of which should be completed and analyzed by the spring, will confirm whether there will be
new hope for persons with MS worldwide.
”Being positive is the key thing,” said Osmond. “It’s not the disease that beats you, but the lack of hope.”

Interesting Quotes About Colostrum
“Immunoglobulin in colostrum has been used to successfully treat: Thrombocytopenia, Anemia,
Neutropenia, Myasthenia Gravis, Guillain Barre Syndrome, Multiple Sclerosis, Systemic Lupus,
Rheumatoid Arthritis, Bulluos Pamphigoid, Kawasaki's Syndrome, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Crohn's disease,
among others.”
”PRP, in bovine colostrum, has the same ability to regulate activity of the immune system as hormones
of the Thymus gland. It activates an underactive immune system, helping it move into action against disease-causing
organisms. PRP also suppresses an overactive immune
system, such as is often seen in the autoimmune diseases. PRP is highly anti-inflammatory
and also appears to act on T-cell precursors to produce helper T-cells and suppresser T-cells.”
”PRP was found not to be species specific (transferable for human use). Turns white blood cells
into functionally active T cells. Results were shown in treatment of auto-immune disorders
and cancer. An important Immune modulator stimulates an underactive immune system and tones down an overactive one.”
”IGF-1, found in colostrum, stimulates bone and muscle growth and nerve regeneration. Also found:
topical administration to wounds resulted in more effective healing.”
”Bovine colostrum contains high levels of growth factors that promote normal cell growth and DNA synthesis.”
”Human clinical study: Immune factors in cow colostrum, when taken orally, are effective against disease-causing
organisms in the intestinal tract. Ingestion of bovine colostrum's immunoglobulins may be a new method of
providing passive immunoprotection against a host of gut-associated disease causing antigens (viral and bacterial).”
"Clinical studies show that IgE (Immunoglobulin), found in bovine colostrum,
may be responsible for regulating allergic response."

"Are You Stressed Enough"
Aren't we already stressed enough today? Stress has become the leading cause of illness in North America.
Doctors estimate that up to 85% of all the ailments people see them for are stress-related. It seems as
though this thing called stress is at fault. But is it really? Don't we, by default of responsibility, subconsciously
choose to allow stress to get the better of us? Isn't it about time we assume greater responsibility
for our lives and choose to not allow stress to affect us? Easier said than done, right? You bet. Possible?
Definitely. Necessary? Never more than right here - right now!
Most people don't realize that there are two kinds of stress - eustress and distress. Eustress is the good
stress our bodies, minds and spirits require in order to adapt and grow in our worlds. Distress is the bad
stuff, sometime external, other times internally generated. Canadian researcher Hans Selye started the stress
research movement in the 1960's. And researchers ever since have over-examined the concept to the point where we know
everything we need to know. However, one major truth has emerged - stress and our responses to it
are extremely personal. Everyone is different.
For my clients, we have found another fundamental truth, albeit at first difficult to comprehend - seeking
stress in one area of life can actually decrease stress in others. That's right - seeking good stress
(eustress), not only increases capacity in that area, it also goes a long way to indirectly decreasing bad stress
(distress) in another. For example, seeking regular bouts of exercise not only increases physical capacity,
it decreases mental tension and anxiety, and provides an emotional release. In short, increasing capacity physically,
mentally, emotionally and spiritually put you in position to handle more when necessary. It's about increasing
your level of MEPS fitness!
Other examples include sitting down to write in your journal. This assists in reducing physical tension, and perhaps
even reducing emotional angst. Depending upon what you write about, the spiritual component may also be positively
affected. Seeking emotional eustress may be as easy as volunteering, or as major as telling the people who
inspire you how much they mean to you (face to face, of course:). Interesting, you say? You bet! The examples
are endless. In my StressChampion™ presentations, it never fails that we always come up with new ways to tackle
old problems. It seems there are as many ways people seek eustress, as there are people. It's personal. And to me,
it’s inspiring.
So... Perhaps we don't have enough stress in our lives! Do you? Are you seeking enough eustress to build capacity
and to move forward in life? And are you managing your distress? Both sides of the equation require your immediate
attention. Sit down and create your own personal MEPS Training Program. Then COMMIT to action! And remember
what Yoda said to Luke – “There is no try, there is only do or do not.”
If you are interested, write me a note and I will send you my MEPS Assessment tool to help get you started.
I can also send you examples of some of my clients MEPS Training Programs. Good luck, and have fun!

Yogability and You - Video and Relaxation CD
Shelley Sidelman is a yoga therapist who has been in private practice since 1995. In 2000 she began
teaching yoga for the Long Island chapter of the MS Society. Her students requested a video that they could
do at home, which inspired this video, an easy can-do “Chair Yoga” program everyone can benefit from.
The first thing I noticed about this video and CD was how easy they were to unwrap!!! I don’t know about
the rest of you, but decreased agility and strength in my right hand has made *opening* things difficult
and CD’s/videos/DVD’s have always been a pain for me! These were a breeze and the plastic nicely slid off.
Just thought I’d mention that, it’s the little things that count!
The first 10-12 minutes of the video is guided breathing and relaxation which sets the tone for the rest
of the hour. This video is great for beginners and those new to exercise and yoga, particularly those
of us with mobility problems. As you can be seated the entire time, a wheelchair and balance problems
aren’t an issue. It is an hour of stretching, breathing and gentle movements that will enable you to reduce pain,
increase circulation, and improve your flexibility. As Shelley says, “The important thing for us
all to remember is to move our bodies everyday… on our best days and on our worst days, especially
on our worst days”. She believes that each of us is unique and special in our own way, and when we
feel connected to ourselves and to others, our journey through life will be more balanced.
The Relaxation CD makes a great accompaniment to the video. It is a chance to lay back, close your eyes
and unwind after a long day or in preparation for one. I love the background sounds of the ocean and
seagulls, that always calms me. Shelley’s voice guides you through the same breathing techniques
as in her video, as well as relaxing every part of your body. The purpose of this CD is to relieve stress,
relax your mind and rejuvenate your spirit.
More information on this video and CD is available at Shelley’s website:
Yogability and You or calling (800) 375-3004 or (516) 797-YOGA (9642).
At her website you can view sample clips from the video or CD and hear testimonials from her students.

Thought For The Day
"A great attitude does much more than turn on the lights in our worlds; it seems to magically connect
us to all sorts of serendipitous opportunities that were somehow absent before the change."
I've often said, 'Whatever you think about, you bring about, so think about great things.'
I know from my personal experience it's often very tough to remain positive when life throws
us extreme challenges. That said, I know for me life is going to happen and I might as well
make sure my attitude is in line with what I want my outcome to be or else I better
brace myself for some good ol’ fashioned beat up sessions. ATTITUDE
DETERMINES YOUR ALTITUDE. Sure we all will experience down days. Setting REALISTIC
GOALS and breaking those goals down into bite size pieces helps keep me focused when life gets tough!
Try it! It's better than the alternative!
